Project Girl

Some say it's "mission impossible."  Dialing back control imposed by commercial media marketers over the lives of girls is the critical quest undertaken by Project Girl, in alliance with the only superpower strong enough to give the mission a fighting chance:  the marketing targets themselves, adolescent girls.

Commercial media marketers view adolescent girls as puppets and themselves as puppeteers pulling the strings.  The lies, tricks and manipulations they use to define, entice and control girls as consumers are diabolical and downright toxic.  But here's the BIG SECRET:  If girls learn to break the harmful codes imbedded in advertising messages, become adept at busting the lies, facing down the fears marketers use to keep us in the checkout line, and help other girls do the same by becoming teachers, allies and activists, the strings of control are cut.  They CAN strip commercial marketers of influence over their lives, their dreams, their happiness, their power to make a difference in the world.

Project Girl is a girl-led initiative working to help girls control the harmful effects of commercial media messages on their lives through art-based information sharing, art-based reflection/introspection, art-based expression, AND art-based activism.  Girl groups around the country are using Project Girl's art-based curriculum and peer-to-peer teaching methodology to increase awareness, inspire change, and encourage social activism among girls.  Project Girl promotes and participates in media literacy programming, facilitates girl-led media reform, and gives girls an active role in creation and critical interpretation of media in their contemporary culture.
