What the Celebrity "Marriages"?!
By Amber Pelletier
Marriage is a union of two people, but we each have our own definition, values, and beliefs about what it should and should not be. Regardless of these beliefs, I think it is safe to say we can all agree that marriage as seen in Hollywood, has become worthless, glorified, and a bit of a joke. Weddings in Hollywood have become extravagant, marriages have become short, and money is always a factor in any Hollywood marriage. Some marriages that play with the definition of marriage and its value include the legendary Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries marriage, the recent divorces of Katy Perry and Russel Brand, as well as Heidi Klum and Seal, Britney Spears and Jason Alexander, and even the hype of the royal wedding.
Kim Kardashian, as we all know, is famous for being famous, so it was no surprise when her “fairytale wedding” to NBA star Kris Humphries was shown on E! over and over.
As glorified and fancy as the wedding was, nobody could save the couple’s marriage, as Kim filed for divorce a measly 72 days after the wedding! As a bystander , I do not know Kim and Kris’ motives (money, fame, true love?), but I sure hope they both take a step back and realize the message they sent to their viewers--something along the lines of “marriage means nothing” sounds right to me!
If you think Kim and Kris’ relationship was short, you will be shocked to learn how long their marriage seemed in comparison to Britney Spears and Jason Alexander! Britney and Jason wed in 2004 and their marriage lasted… 55 Hours! I guess Britney and Jason were thinking marriage was like her song “Hit Me Baby One More Time” as they thought it was acceptable to have marriage and be done, without even thinking!
In recent news, Katy Perry and Russel Brand have recently filed for divorce. Katy cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their divorce. Katy and Russel met in 2009 and wed 14 months ago. The couple never signed a prenup, but, Russel seems to be taking the high round and is not going to be taking any of Katy’s money.
Recently, at the Grammy’s, Katy sang a song that many believe was sparked by Russel and the divorce. It seems to me that Russel took the high road and Katy went for the low blow by publicly acknowledging her thoughts about them.
As for the royal wedding, I have no doubt in my mind that Kate and William are truly in love. The couple has been through a lot in their relationship and they have been together for a long time. My issue with their marriage was the hype that surrounded it. The week before the royal wedding you could not turn on your television without seeing an image, a speculation, or mention of the wedding. I understand that the
couple is royalty, but are there not other things worth reporting?
My point? Marriage is something that celebrities have either been glorifying or treating like it means nothing. This is troubling to me, as the stars are making headlines and our youth is seeing failed marriages over and over again. This is not good news as the glorification and disregard to the value of marriage is something that children in our society are growing up to see as normal, and that is not okay with me! Celebrities need to take a step back and assess their love life before taking the plunge into marriage. Marriage is important, and our views on it vary from person to person. Some people do not believe in marriage, but they remain committed to their significant other and that is great! However, if the headlines and behavior in Hollywood continue, the overall value of marriage and committed relationships are sure to be tarnished for our youth.
