Strong Women, Strong Girls

The mission of Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG) is to utilize the lessons learned from strong women throughout history to encourage girls and young women to become strong women themselves. By building communities of women committed to supporting positive social change, Strong Women, Strong Girls works to create cycles of mutual empowerment for women and girls.

Research shows that when girls and young women are provided with access to positive relationships, skill-building opportunities, and role models, they thrive.  SWSG utilizes a group mentoring model that engages a team of 3-4 college women as mentors to a small group of 10-15 elementary school girls.  By involving girls in a group mentoring setting, they build strong relationships with their mentors and peers. During the first part of SWSG, the mentors and curriculum focus on building the girls' social-emotional skills; skills that research demonstrates allow girls to successfully navigate healthy relationships and achieve life-long success. During the second half of SWSG, the mentors and girls put their skills into action. They become advocates for social change by implementing a service-project to address a community need.

Simultaneously, college women volunteers are given the opportunity to engage in a mentoring relationship of their own through the Strong Leaders Program.  The Strong Leaders Program matches college women volunteers with professional women mentors to engage in a one-on-one relationship designed to facilitate skill-building, relationships, and role models as the college women embark on their adult lives.  These two mutual cycles of empowerment are designed in the spirit of SWSG's belief that a woman can benefit from a mentoring relationship at any time in her life.
